The Department of Zoology at the University of Gothenburg has a long-standing reputation of good research and teaching. Research in the Department is organized into three subjects; Animal ecology, Biology with an emphasis on Systematics and Biodiversity and Zoophysiology. These span a broad spectrum of zoology.
[25 Jan 2010] A species of bird, which has only been observed alive on three previous occasions since it was first discovered in 1867, has been rediscovered in a remote land corridor in north-eastern Afghanistan. The discovery was made as part of an international collaboration, which included researchers at the University of Gothenburg.
[25 Jan 2010] A doctoral thesis from the University of Gothenburg shows that Swedes generally accept protective hunting as a means of saving threatened species. But only as long as crows, minks and gulls are killed and not foxes or raptors.
[17 Dec 2009] Every year, large amounts of hatchery-raised young salmonids are released into Swedish rivers and streams to compensate for losses in natural production. Butthese fish generally survive poorly in the wild.. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg have discovered why: the young fish get too crowded at the hatchery.
[25 Nov 2009] In the pipefish, the male cares for the offspring. Apart from the ones he sucks the life out of. The discovery of filial cannibalism in the pipefish is now creating a stir in the research world.
[19 Nov 2009] Plan a wetland area at the Gothenburg park Slottsskogen and devise new educational exhibitions at conservation centre Nordens Ark. These are just two examples of the sorts of assignments that biology students from the University of Gothenburg have been given by companies based in the region.
